LV My Brother's Keeper

Early in 2014, President Obama introduced the MBK challenge to Mayors across America to address the issues young men of color face in our urban corridors. Since then over 2,000 cities accepted the challenge and immediately started forming coalitions of stakeholders to identify, and provide solutions as they addressed identified issues within their communities.

Allentown joined the challenge during the last quarter of 2014 and began exploring the formation of a stakeholder coalition. This stakeholder coalition held their initial meeting on April 25, 2015 at Muhlenberg College. It was decided that as we moved forward with the MBK initiative, it would be an inclusive effort of the entire Lehigh Valley. Invitations went out to Mayors of the three major cities in the Lehigh Valley, as well as community leaders in those cities.

The first meeting was attended by a group of 64 leaders. An outcome from that meeting yielded a signed pledge to continue to work together as a Lehigh Valley and to begin to address the issues that prevent young men of color to succeed.

Questions concerning the development of this initiative can be directed towards Ismael Arcelay in the Mayors Office at 610 437-7743.
