Parks Dept Awarded IronPigs Charities Grant

The Allentown Department of Parks & Recreation’s Summer Playground Program as well as Cedar Sports Day will have even more sports equipment for the summer of 2019!

IronPigs Charities has awarded Friends of the Allentown Parks a community grant of nearly $5,000 that benefits children who participate in the Allentown Parks & Recreation Department Summer Playground Program. Friends of the Allentown Parks was selected from a pool of 80 applicants. The grant will be presented on January 29.

This grant will be used to:
1. Introduce approximately 900 children in Allentown to a variety of sports.
2. Provide children with an opportunity to practice mainstream sports under the auspices of the Allentown Playground Program.
3. Provide the necessary sports equipment commensurate with the sports amenities available at various Allentown park/playground locations.
4. Increase enrollment of Allentown youth in organized sports.

The Summer Playground Program is a free eight (8) week outdoor program for children in Allentown between the ages of 7 and 15 at 19 different playground sites throughout the city. This program provides supervised activities, games, sports, reading, arts & crafts and fun! The program runs June through August and 2019 will be the 106th year of the successful program.
