APD Officer Honored for Valor

APD Officer Honored for Valor
Allentown Police Officer David Howells III was among more than 40 Greater Philadelphia Area police officers, firefighters, and correctional officers honored this month for extraordinary acts of courage, empathy, and meritorious service during a ceremony at the National Liberty Museum.

The Awards of Valor are presented by the Philadelphia Area Chevrolet Dealers Group. Each of the honorees was selected for their gripping and inspirational stories, representing the epitome of what Chevrolet and the NLM consider “Every Day Heroes.”

Officer Howells was recognized for his role in the July 2013 arrest of an armed suspect on N. Seventh Street. Howells had observed the suspect showing a handgun to two other persons. The suspect fled after Howells ordered him to raise his hands. Howells chased the suspect, deployed his Taser and subdued the suspect after a struggle. The gun turned out to be stolen.

The defendant was sentenced in April 2014 to 3 ½ to 7 years in prison.

Officer Howells is an eight year veteran of the department. He is the son of former assistant police chief and current District Justice David Howells Jr., and the grandson of former police chief and City Council President David Howells Sr.
