Cycling Instructors Travel Allentown Sharrows
Representatives of CAT-Coalition for Appropriate Transportation were in Allentown this afternoon to demonstrate correct technique for bicycling in traffic. The demonstrations traveled over many of painted arrow-like "shared road" or "sharrows" road markings recently applied to a variety of city streets. Some 200 markings have been painted on streets in the city.

Ride participants today included PennDOT District 5 Bike/Ped Coordinator, Stephen Pohowsky; Officers Scott Magill and Danny Miller of the Allentown Police Bicycle Patrol; League of American Bicyclists certified Cycling Instructors, Steve Schmitt; Scott Slingerland; and Brian Sherry and members of the news media.

CAT offers classes in basic bike education, cycle smart traffic skills, basic bike maintenance and advanced mechanics. The coalition also offers bicycle education events to schools, scouts and community groups. More information can be obtained by calling CAT at 610-954-5744 or at www.car-free.org. All classes are taught by League of American Bicyclists certified League Cycling Instructors.

PennDOT offers a manual on safe bicycling on public roads and streets. You can download the full version at www.dot.state.pa.us and clicking on “forms and Publications.” Copies are also currently available at the Allentown Health Bureau.
